Seeing your nails turn yellow can easily make you think that there’s something really wrong with them. Now, before you panic, here’s what you need to know about yellow nails.

Nail polishes are the most common cause of yellow nails, particularly the darker shades. They contain pigments that can stain your nails over time.
Another factor that can turn your nails yellow is smoking. Just imagine holding a cigarette. As you wrap your fingers around it, tar and nicotine can leave stains on your nails as well as the skin surrounding the nail beds.
Apart from those chemicals, the effects of smoking in your body can also change the color of your nails. Since cigarettes can constrict your blood vessels, there will be less oxygen and nutrients that can reach your nails.
In some cases, yellow nails can be due to an underlying health condition. Rheumatoid arthritis, chronic liver disease, and poor lifestyle habits are great examples. Repeated treatment of psoriasis, diabetes and thyroid problems can contribute to nail staining as well.
Fungal infections can cause yellow nails, too. If you see your discolored nails flaking and peeling, fungi are probably the ones to blame.
Get a bowl and fill half of it with fresh lemon juice and soak your nails in it for about 15 minutes. After such time, gently scrub your nails using a soft brush. Once you are done buffing every surface, rinse your nails with lukewarm water and apply a good hand lotion after. You can do this remedy twice a day until you get the results you are looking for.
If the cause of your yellow nails is bacteria and fungi, tea tree oil can greatly help. Just add a couple of drops of tea tree oil to a carrier oil, like coconut or jojoba oil. After mixing the two together, apply it to your affected nails.
Take a 3% hydrogen peroxide and add three to four tablespoons of it to a half cup of water. After mixing the two, soak your nails in it for about two minutes. Scrub your nails and rinse off with water.
If your favorite nail polish is the one to blame for your discolored nails, you can use a whitening toothpaste to solve the problem. Take note that this trick will only work on fresh stains.
Baking soda is another great solution to fungal infection. Just add some baking soda in a basin with lukewarm water and soak your hands or feet in it.
Another alternative is to use baking soda as a scrub for your nails. For this trick, get one tablespoon of baking soda. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice and one-half teaspoon of olive oil.
Combine the three ingredients together until you get a paste-like consistency. Scrub the mixture on your nails using a soft toothbrush and wait for about five minutes before rinsing it off. Do this twice a month to get the best results.
Prevention is always better than cure, right?
Well, the same goes for your nails.
